Overview

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an excellent backdrop for students as they explore the natural world.  This unit is broken into three parts. The overall unit involves a trip to the park and is accompanied by three preparation activities and three wrap-up activities.  This is Part 2 of the field preparation activity of the unit. 


Objective(s)

1) List at least three items to carry with them when they hike with their families in the woods.
2) List three methods to keep from getting lost.
3) Identify the most important thing to do when lost.
4) Discuss and identify three dangers in the woods and know how to avoid them.



Background

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an excellent backdrop for students as they explore the natural world. The program is designed to introduce students to the interdependence between the climate and the biodiversity at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Additionally, students will gain knowledge of how human activities can adversely affect the biodiversity within the park.

Materials

This lesson includes a discussion sheet on safety in the national park and a Pre and Post Site Test.



Procedure

Step 1: Discuss safety sheet with students.


Step 2: Have students identify items needed for a day hike.

Step 3: Summarize safety issues discussed.

Assessment

Administer a pre and post site test that is included in the unit.
