WEST GLACIER, MONT. - Entrance fees to Glacier National Park will be waived on Sunday, August 25 to celebrate the 97th birthday of the National Park Service. Visitors are encouraged to explore the park and participate in a wide-range of ranger-led activities including guided hikes, evening programs, and boat tours. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act, an act of Congress that created the National Park Service and mandated the agency "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." Today, the National Park Service cares for 401 sites throughout the country, each providing various recreational and educational opportunities. These places also provide valuable insight into our shared natural and cultural history. Visitors to Glacier National Park are encouraged to visit the Discovery Cabin in the Apgar Village where the whole family can learn about the adaptations of Glacier's predators and prey. August 25 is the last day the Discovery Cabin will be open to the public for the 2013 season. Various ranger-led hikes are available including the John's Lake Loop Hike, an easy 3-mile walk lasting 2 hours. An annual Glacier National Park pass is available for $35, allowing unlimited access to the park for one year from time of purchase of the pass. An annual pass available for $80 allows free entrance to federally operated recreation sites across the county. Glacier National Park, as well as the other 400 sites of the National Park Service, offers a free annual pass to active duty military members and their dependents. The annual pass allows free entrance to national parks and other federal recreation sites. A current and valid military identification card must be presented to obtain the pass. The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass Program also offers citizens 62 years of age and older a lifetime pass for $10, and citizens with a permanent disability a free lifetime pass. These passes allow free entrance to sites managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Forest Service. Additional fee-free days for 2013 include September 28, celebrating National Public Lands Day, and November 9-11, honoring veterans on Veterans Day weekend.
