Winter Field Trip Schedule (Grades 1 to 2)

Flexibility for weather conditions, bus problems, etc…is essential to having an enjoyable visit to the park. No two school programs are exactly alike, but the following schedule represents a typical trip.

8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Travel to the Park
Simple assignments can be completed by seatmates or individuals during this time. Point out sights along the way that relate to the park story such as the amount of snow along the route, if they see farm fields or ranches versus cities or forests.

9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Meet Park Rangers at Designated Site
After a brief welcome by the park rangers to Glacier National Park, the ranger(s) will talk with the group about the National Park Mission and take a snack/bathroom break,

10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Snow Cup Experiment and Puppet Show
Rangers will discuss national parks as places to do science and introduce the snow cup experiment. Students will make predictions about how much water will be in their cups when the snow melts and then everyone will go and view a puppet show about how animals survive winter in Glacier – by hibernating, migrating or resisting.

10:45 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Native American Story

11 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Lunch and Wrap-Up Snow Cup Experiment

11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. Snowshoe Hike

1:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Snowshoes Off and Bathroom Breaks

1:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Bus Leaves the Park
