Superintendent Mike Caldwell announced today that several high school and college students will be working with the staff at Fort Stanwix and partner institutions to complete several important projects. "We are very pleased to have these students involved at the fort and in our community this summer. These students are a good complement to the staff we have already brought on" said Mike Caldwell, Superintendent.
Kim Robinson of Baltimore, Maryland will spend the summer in Rome cataloging and consolidating archival records of the fort's artifact collections; including reading, reviewing, and researching of records, and using National Park Service cataloging software. Ms. Robinson will also work with the park rangers on public programs and activities. She is part of the NPS Cultural Diversity Internship Program and has completed internships at Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in Greeneville, Tennessee and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Ms. Robinson is currently enrolled in the Master's Degree program in Museum Studies at George Washington University. Her goal this summer is to continue to improve her skills in the area of collections management and learn more about the importance of interpreting national historic sites. Ms. Robinson looks forward to pursuing a career with the NPS upon graduation.
Elizabeth Hickox of Westmoreland, New York is returning to Fort Stanwix for a second summer. She will be working with the NPS, the City of Rome, and the Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor Commission on the Main Street Corridor Revitalization Project. Ms. Hickox recently completed her Bachelor of Science in Music Industry at The College of Saint Rose in Albany. In October she will be headed to Sacramento, California to spend the next 10 months working with AmeriCorps. After her job is completed with AmeriCorps Ms. Hickox hopes to start a career in the music industry or with a cultural art council.
In addition to the college interns there will be twenty high school students from Rome working with the fort and its partners on a myriad of projects this summer. Students will work on projects at the fort as well as with the Rome Historical Society, the City of Rome, and Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site. They will develop a newsletter for Fort Stanwix, complete several curatorial and archival projects; conduct historical research; develop exhibits about Rome for the Rome Historical Society; assist with the completion of landscape projects at Oriskany Battlefield and throughout the City of Rome; and assist the Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor Commission with an survey of architectural styles along main streets in downtown Rome. Funding for this program is provided by the Oneida County Workforce Development office.
