Parks as Classrooms
The site has developed two packets of pre visit and post visit materials to accompany Life ont the Frontier and Sweep Through History. In addition, a series of lesson plans are available for classroom instruction. Teachers can also find an abundance of information about life at Fort Scott in the 1840s by browsing our virtual resource center.
Fort Scott NHS offers a few different field trip options: Life on the Frontier for grades K-4 and A Sweep Through History for grades 5-8. These two programs are offered on selected days in April and May. Schools coming other times of the year can request a guided tour, take a self guided tour, or choose one or two stations (dependent on staffing) from those offered in the formal school programs.
Fort Scott NHS is the only NPS site that interprets Bleeding Kansas and likely the only site that has a traveling trunk with activities that highlight that era. Props and scripts for plays, historic documents and images, activities for math, music and science are just some of the goodies you will find in this trunk.
