National Park Service Releases Investigation Report on Flight 93 Fire
The National Park Service (NPS) today issued a report and corrective action plan that outlined the major factors that led to a devastating fire at the headquarters of Flight 93 National Memorial and steps the agency will take to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Western PA’s National Parks Welcomes 4th Grade Students through Every Kid in a Park Initiative
The five National Park Service sites in Western PA invite all 4th grade students to visit the parks for free as part of the White House’s new Every Kid in a Park program. Starting September 1, 4th grade students can now go to www.everykidinapark.gov to complete an activity and obtain a free annual entry pass to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including national parks.

Secretaries of Interior and Homeland Security to Speak at Flight 93 National Memorial Ceremonies
U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson will deliver remarks at the dedication of the Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center and the annual 9/11 observance, respectively. The ceremonies on September 10 and 11 honor the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

August 25, 2015 marks the National Park Service’s 99th birthday and the start of the land agency’s centennial celebration into 2016. As the Western Pennsylvania National Parks (WEPA) prepare for the centennial year we are looking for talented fourth graders to share their park experience in art. The winning entry will be used on the annual five park pass for the 2016 season.

Flight 93 National Memorial will honor the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on the 14th anniversary of September 11 with two days of special programs, including the dedication of the new visitor center on Thursday, September 10 and the annual 9/11 observance on Friday, September 11.

Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center to Open September 10
Shanksville, Pa. – The new Flight 93 National Memorial Visitor Center will open to the public at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 10, 2015. The permanent exhibits use photographs, artifacts, tactile models, audio, and video pieces to convey the Flight 93 story in the context of the other terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
Due to expected heavy visitation and limited space in the visitor center, entry for all visitors will be via a timed ticket with a specific date and time for the visit.

Volunteers Care For Memorial Grove Trees at Flight 93 National Memorial
On May 2 the National Park Service and volunteers from the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial came together on a beautiful Saturday to prune over 1,500 trees that make up the Memorial Groves dedicated to the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93. The 40 Memorial Groves, planted in 2012, sweep along the inside of the Park Entrance Road from the Visitor Center Complex to the Memorial Plaza.

Tourism to Western PA National Parks Creates $68 Million in Economic Benefit
A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 852,325 visitors to the five National Parks in Western PA spent $49 million dollars in local communities near the five parks in 2014. That visitor spending supported 827 jobs in the region and had a cumulative benefit to the regional economy of $68 million dollars.

During National Park Week, on Saturday April 17 and 18 National Park Service staff, the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial and Park volunteers will work side by side to remove the invasive shrub Autumn Olive that is threatening the survival of the thousands of native trees planted at Flight 93 National Memorial.
