Seismic Studies

Advances in the scientific study of earthquakes -seismology- enable scientists to clarify what is happening beneath the surface of the ground. A better understanding of the Yellowstone Volcano helps scientists improve monitoring techniques for earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The first seismic stations were installed in Yellowstone in 1973. Today there is a permanent network of 22 seismic stations and scientists know that thousands of earthquakes occur in the park each year
