For the first year in over a decade, Death Valley National Park's annual visitation soared past the one million mark, registering 1.1 million people who came to the park. 2013's figures were about 950,000, and have generally been on the upswing since 2010. Cheap gas, plus the renovation of the Furnace Creek Visitor Center with up-to-date exhibits and informational stations to aid park visitors contributed to the increase. There was a marked change in the months of December from 2014 to 2015--the park saw an increase of 71% for this one month period. With the promise of an upcoming spring bloom and in anticipation of the National Park Services Centennial in 2016, park staff are planning for a busy year—including the summer months.
