While the largest body of water in Colorado is within Curecanti, there are a variety of ecosystems here besides Blue Mesa Reservoir. Curecanti also hosts riparian habitats, steep canyons, and areas of ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and aspen.

The average precipitation at Curecanti is only 12" a year, which is why there are few trees around Blue Mesa Reservoir.
