She was a remarkable person

Clara Barton dedicated her life and energies to help others in times of need - both home and abroad, in peacetime as well as during military emergencies. Glen Echo was her home the last 15 years of her life and the structure illustrates her dedication and concern for those less fortunate than herself.

Junior Ranger Camps 2009

Junior Ranger Camps:

July 7-8, July 14-15, July 28-29

and August 4-5

10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

History will come alive for children ages 9-12 during two-day camps with fun-filled learning activities related to Clara Barton’s life and the history of Glen Echo Park. Children will gain an understanding of the National Park Service mission and the national significance of both sites. Openings are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited, and reservations are required. Free. Please call 301-320-1410 for reservations.

Visit Clara Barton National Historic Site

Clara Barton National Historic Site commemorates the life of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. The home served as the headquarters and warehouse for the organization. The house is shown by guided tour only. Tours start on the hour between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. There is no admission charge. The site is open daily but closed on Thanksgiving Day, December 25 and January 1. We have several Special Events during 2009, view the complete list.

You may become a Clara Barton National Historic Site on-line Junior Ranger by completing one of the on-line activities in the Clara Barton Interactive Experience and mailing us a copy of your completed certificate with your return mailing address. We will mail you a Junior Ranger Award. Please tell us which activity level you completed.

Climate

Glen Echo, Maryland is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Summers are usually humid and hot. Winters are usually above freezing but cold. Snowfalls do occur, but are usually not deep. Spring and fall brings beautiful sunny days as well as wind and rain. Clara Barton National Historic Site is not air-conditioned nor well heated. The house has a front porch, but there is no other weather shelter while waiting for tours.
