It has come to the attention of Buffalo River staff that a change in the 2014 Fishing Guidebook, published by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, states that snagging is prohibited on the river per NPS regulation. Buffalo National River accepts the responsibility for this miscommunication to AGFC. Fishing techniques with hook and line are supported by 36 CFR (Code of Federal Regulation) § 2.3(d)1. Additionally, 36 CFR § 7.35(a)1, which pertains specifically to Buffalo River, states, "Unless otherwise designated by the Superintendent, fishing in a manner authorized under applicable State law is allowed."  Snagging falls under the latter category. Of course not all laws can be packed into a pocket sized booklet, so be advised that Buffalo National River does have some specific laws pertaining to the Buffalo River set by the Superintendent's Compendium.

The compendium is available on our website:https://www.nps.gov/buff/parkmgmt/upload/2013-Compendium-with-maps-111313.pdf, and is a living document (changing every year) to deal with new preservation and protection challenges.
