Big South Fork Announces Opening Schedule for Park Campgrounds

With springtime not far around the corner, it is time to begin planning for your visit to the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The Bandy Creek and Blue Heron Campgrounds will officially open on the National Recreation Reservation Service beginning on Tuesday, April 1. Campsites can be reserved online at www.recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777.
If you would like to get an early start on your camping trip, Bandy Creek Campground Loop D is open year-round and provides a heated bath house with hot water showers. Alum Ford Campground is a primitive facility also open year-round and is located in the Kentucky section of the park.

Longhunters were some of the first Europeans to traverse the Big South Fork region. It is said they were called longhunters either for the long rifles they carried or because the were typically gone on hunting trips for so long, sometimes up to a year.
