Smooth Green Snake (Opheodrys vernalis)

If you can see past their camouflage, smooth greens are one of the most commonly seen snakes at Jewel Cave National Monument.

  • A small terrestrial snake, adults ranging from 12–20 inches in length.
  • Hibernate over winter in mammal burrows or rock crevices.
  • Easily identified as the only solid green snake in South Dakota.

Identification
  • Solid bright green in color and have a light-yellow belly.
  • Juvenile coloration is like adult coloration.

Diet
  • Feed primarily on small invertebrates and earthworms

Interactions with other animals
  • Prey to foxes, weasels, coyotes, other snakes, and birds of prey.
