Governors Island was one of the longest continually operated military bases in the country, operated for two centuries, by the U.S. Army and later the U.S. Coast Guard until its closure in 1996.

Guided Tours - Free:

There are no formal, guided tours scheduled at this time
When our guided tours schedule start you can either come to Governors Island on the day of and sign up or reserve a spot on a scheduled tour in advance by going here:

Self-Guided - Free:
The forts will be opening, Friday May 24, 2024. We will be open all weekend, as well as Memorial Day Monday May 27th. Going forward from May 29th, we will be open Wednesday through Sunday, as well as Federal Holidays. Hours of Fort Operations are 10 AM-5 PM. Staff will be on hand to answer your questions

Open Saturday and Sunday, in season, 11am to 4pm (staff permitting)
