NEW EXHIBIT

April 8 – May 19 Alan Ross
The Language of Light
Yosemite and Alan Ross have a storied history. Mr. Ross has been photographing this hallowed valley since he first came to work for Ansel Adams in 1974. Many adventures followed — the camera in tow as he developed his language of light.
In Alan’s own words:

‘For me, a photograph is very much a kind of language. It can be as practical and unadornedasanentryinanencyclopedia. It can be a chapter in a novel, or it can be haiku. And for those of us to whom words do not come easily, a photograph is a language that allows us to express who we are and how we respond to the world around us. I have used this “language of light” for more than 40 years.’

Love, respect, admiration, sensuality, challenge, triumph, power, joy, awe, humility...all are more clearly and eloquently expressed through images like “Spring Rain,” “Tenacity Defined,” or “Cabin Tetons,” than any words I could conjure.’ My visual interests have no real boundaries. I find equal inspiration in architecture, humor, irony, grand landscapes and the tiniest of details. I take great pleasure in noticing how shapes, tones and textures can tell a story or express an emotion.’

I don’t make photographs to hide them away in a box; making a print and having someone respond with an understanding into who I am, what I think, what I feel, and how I view my place in the universe is my reward.’ The Ansel Adams Gallery has hosted a series of exhibitions throughout the years that showcase Mr. Ross’ unique vision, and we are excited to continue this tradition. Between April 8th and May19th, 2018, The Language of Light will be on view in Yosemite Village, with a closing reception for Mr. Ross on May 12th from 3-5pm. All are welcome to attend this event and we hope to see you there!

Looking West: Photographs by Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams is a distinct paradigm of the American West from his wild adventures

to his modern methods and embrace of technology, along with his romanticizing of the open spaces and their vernacular — and all the way down to his bolo and white stetson. He came of age in San Francisco during the early parts of the twentieth century, a time that saw two competing worlds clash as the final days of a frayed frontier gave up ground to an increasingly mechanized world. As a curious witness, it is no less important that Ansel found his artist’s voice by interpreting this old landscape through a recent advancement in technology — the camera. He never relented documenting the architecture, people and mountains as they fluxed and flexed, while he walked a figurative tightrope between these old and new worlds — both of which he recognized as being significant to society. Looking West will honor the determination of spirit of Ansel Adams within his unique place in history by displaying a variety of hand made photographs from his lifetime. These images will showcase a wide range of subjects and materials and will include early works from the 1920’s to others completed towards the end of his life, as well as pieces from some of his last organized portfolios. This exhibition will open at The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Village on January 8th, 2018 and run through February 24th, 2018.

Light and Land: Photographs by Michael Frye

Photographer Michael Frye has been working in and around Yosemite National Park for three decades. During that time he has thoroughly explored this vast, beautiful, and diverse region, looking for moments, both during the day and at

night, when the weather and light convey the power and mood of the landscape. His work has been widely published and exhibited, and he is the author or principal photographer of five books, including The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite and Yosemite Meditations. “Light and Land” will open on February 25th and run through April 7th, 2018. We invite you to visit The Gallery during your stay in Yosemite so that you may enjoy these works in person.
