General Equipment List

The following is a general list of the types of equipment recommended for wilderness travel. Depending on the length of your trip and your experience, you may want to add or subtract items from the list. For example, if you are traveling in fall or winter, you may want to pack additional cold-weather clothing or storm gear.

  • Sleeping bag
  • Backpack
  • Clothing
    • Hiking boots (broken in and waterproofed)
    • Socks (wool and liner)
    • Jacket/sweater
    • Rain gear
    • Hat and/or stocking cap
    • Shirts (long- and short-sleeve), pants, shorts
  • Cook stove with extra fuel bottle
  • Cook pans
  • Waterproof matches or lighter
  • Bear canister
  • Cup, bowl, spoon, fork, knife
  • Water bottles or canteens
  • Water filter or water treatment kit
    • Water storage container (to reduce trips to a water source)
  • Garbage bags, resealable bags (for packing out waste and repackaging food)
  • Sunglasses
  • Mosquito repellent, chapstick, sunscreen
  • Toilet paper (in plastic bag with additional plastic bag for packing out used paper)
  • Flashlight or headlamp (with extra batteries and bulb), candle lantern
  • Toiletries (toothbrush/paste, personal medications etc.)
  • First-aid kit, emergency survival blanket
  • Repair kits for your stove, tent, backpack, hiking boots etc.
  • Camera, binoculars
  • Maps, compass, field guide, guidebook

Extra gear, such as stove fuel, food, first-aid kits, etc., are available for purchase in Yosemite:

  • Curry Village Mountain Shop
  • Wawona Store (limited selection of groceries)
  • Crane Flat Store (limited selection of groceries)
  • Tuolumne Meadows Store (limited selection of groceries)

The Mountain Shop at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley carries a selection of backpacking gear available for rent and sale. Items for rent include: sleeping bags, sleeping pads, overnight packs, day packs, fanny packs, and tents. A limited number of each item may be available to rent (it's best to rent equipment before arriving at Yosemite).
