Frequently-Asked Questions

Who may use the collections? Where can I use them?

The Yosemite Research Library (YRL) is open to Park staff, partners and the public. Special collections (photos, original documents, etc.) are available to Park staff and researchers for in-house use with valid photo identification and by appointment only. Walk-in requests for special collections access will not be honored. Please email the reference staff to make an appointment, and refer to our Access Policy (17KB PDF) for a full list of rules for the YRL Research Center.

Where is the YRL located?

The YRL is located on the second floor of the museum building on the west end of the Yosemite Village. The nearest Valley shuttle stops are #5 and #9.

Is the YRL wheelchair accessible?

The historic building that houses the YRL does not have an elevator. If you are interested in visiting the library and have accessibility needs, please view the accessibility page, the accessibility guide and/or contact the Yosemite Research Library directly.

What are the YRL hours?

The library hours are from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm, Monday through Thursday. Appointments are highly recommended.

How can I look up a publication in the catalog?

The materials in our collections can be found in the NPS Libris Catalog. While searching, make sure to add YOSE in the location field.

May I browse or retrieve materials myself?

The circulating books and magazines in the YRL are available for self-service.

May I check out materials from the YRL?

Full borrowing privileges are extended to National Park Service (NPS) staff and partners only. Special Collections are not available through interlibrary loan, and must be used in the YRL.

Is help available to researchers?

Reference assistance with the collection is available, as is limited research assistance. Staff are unable to undertake lengthy research investigations.

Are there restrictions on what sort of items I can bring into the YRL?

Please leave all bags and personal items on the shelves outside of the front door. We have limited space and like to keep our areas available for researchers. Food and drink items are not allowed in the library. Please do not bring pens or personal scanners into the library.

Does the YRL provide computer facilities for word processing and other applications? Is Wi-fi available?

While researchers may bring laptops, tablets, and silent smart phones into the library, the YRL does not provide computers for word processing or other software applications. There are computers available to assist in research, but Wi-fi is not available. There is Wi-fi available in the Mariposa Public Library branch, located across the street in the Girl's Club.

How can I get reproductions of materials?

Requests for reproductions from library and special collections may be available, depending on the item's condition. Fees recovered from the delivery of reproductions are used to support the use and preservation of the Park's collections. All copies are produced by Park staff only. Payment is accepted with a credit card or check, and must be received in advance before an order can be processed. Please view our cost recovery (168KB PDF) guidelines and image request form (153KB PDF) for more information.

How do I get permission to publish an image from the collection?

Please review our copyright agreement (9KB PDF) for more information.

Can I volunteer or intern at the YRL?

The YRL periodically has volunteer and internship opportunities for both short-term, project-based and long-term assignments. Please contact the YRL Librarian to learn more.

How can I donate to the YRL?

Questions concerning donations of library materials should be directed to the YRL Librarian. For more information about supporting the library, visit our YRL Support page.

How can I donate material to the archives or museum collection?

The park collects and preserves materials that document the history of Yosemite National Park. Questions concerning donations of archival materials or objects to the museum collection may be directed to the attention of the Museum.

The creation and design of web access to the Yosemite Research Library is made possible through the generosity of Yosemite Conservancy donors; who supported the 2016 Yosemite Research Library project. In 2016, park staff and interns began to modernize access to the resources protected by the library, which have grown exponentially over the years since its opening. The work on the website and digital catalog of library holdings are part of this project.
