Backcountry Campsite Availability

What's available? The table below shows backcountry campsite availabilty for the next 10 days. The table is accurate as of the last update and may not reflect current availability. Campsites marked with an "X" are unavailable for the specific date.

Refer to the availability table before contacting the Central Backcountry Office to obtain a backcountry permit.

All backcountry permits are being issued remotely through the Central Backcountry Office via phone and email. Permits are available no earlier than 2-days before the start of your trip.

To obtain a backcountry permit: Call the Central Backcountry Office at 307-344-2160 (no earlier than 2-days prior to your trip). Before calling, you may email a copy of your completed Backcountry Permit Application to speed up the process. Backcountry office staff will review backcountry regulations and safety information, collect the backcountry permit fee, and email you a copy of your backcountry permit after we speak with you.

Important information:

  • Do not submit your backcountry permit application earlier than 2-days prior to your trip.
  • Permits are available from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Permits will not be issued after 4:00 pm.
  • Advanced reservations (trip start date is more than 2-days away) for backcountry permits use a different application and are accepted by mail or fax only. The fee for making an advanced reservation is $25.

The table below shows campsite availability for a 10-day interval from the time of the last update. Contact the Central Backcountry Office for availability beyond the dates shown in the table.

"X" indicates the campsite is not available for the specified date. Refer to the Backcountry Trip Planner for a map of campsite locations and a list with occupancy limits and allowable travel methods of each campsite. Contact the Central Backcountry Office for availability at the dock sites (7L5, 7L6, and 7M4) on Yellowstone Lake.
