Conference registration is now open for the 13th Biennial Scientific Conference on the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE). HeldOctober 4-6, 2016at the Jackson Lake Lodge, the conference can accommodate 350 participants. Full conference participant registration is $350 with a student registration rate of $250. The conference focus this year is on deriving management lessons and applications from previous practices, recognizing trends, and anticipating future conservation needs in the GYE. Throughout the region and across the globe, social-ecological systems are undergoing rapid changes that threaten wildlands and the biota they sustain. The National Park Service Centennial is an opportune time to reflect on the past, as we envision the future for the GYE. 

Highlights from this year’s conference include keynote speaker, David Quammen. David is an author and journalist whose fifteen books include The Song of the Dodo (1996), Spillover (2012), and, most recently, Yellowstone: A Journey through America’s Wild Heart (2016), an expanded version of his text for the May 2016 special issue of National Geographic Magazine, with photographs from the same team of photographers. Quammen’s opening keynote address will occuron Tuesday evening,October 4th, and tickets for that event only are also available on the website.  

Honored guest speakers at the conference also include Dr. Bill Wyckoff (Aubrey L. Haines Award winner), Dr. Robert Gresswell (A. Starker Leopold Award winner), and Dr. Gary Tabor (Superintendent’s International Lecture Award winner). Along with an in-depth look at the work of over 130 scientists and managers in the GYE, this event will provide an excellent opportunity for professional networking in the region. Field trips focusing on both natural and cultural resources, as well as a science communication field trip, offer unique opportunities to learn about the area and develop new skills. Thanks to a donation of a film from Jackson Hole WILD (www.jhwild.org), a feature film will be shown during the conference.

The Biennial Scientific Conference series is dedicated to highlighting the challenges and success stories within the GYE. Since 1991, this conference has become the foremost scientific venue for researchers, conservation groups, and management partners with a shared interest in understanding the geologic, cultural, and biological resources of the region. The conference is sponsored by the Yellowstone Association, with participation from several state, federal, tribal and private organizations.
