Make Waves- With the Flagstaff Festival of Science and your Flagstaff Area National Monuments

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA - Sunset Crater Volcano, Walnut Canyon and Wupatki National Monuments will be celebrating the Festival of Science with events for the whole family.

Entrance fees will be waived on September 29th, 2012 at Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater Volcano, and Wupatki National Monuments to celebrate National Public Lands Day, and on September 30th, 2012, Sunset Crater Volcano and Wupatki National Monument will waive the entrance fee for the Festival of Science Open House.

From hiking the ancient landscapes of Wupatki with an archeologist, to hitting the trail on a Family Discovery Hike at Walnut Canyon, come join us in learning how water affects our past and our future. Come out to the Flagstaff Area National Monuments and experience the wonders of science firsthand!

WUPATKI National Monument: Hike with an Archaeologist - Friday, September 28, 2012, 10am. Take a guided tour through time at Wupatki National Monument. Visit prehistoric farming sites and discuss modern water conservation efforts. Space is limited; reservations are required. Call 928-526-1157, ext. 225. The entrance fee is $5.00/person for visitors 16 and over for entry into the monument, and passes are honored and sold.

WALNUT CANYON National Monument: Family Discovery Hike - Saturday, September 29, 2012, 10am and 2pm. Join in this easy kid-friendly exploration of Walnut Canyon National Monument. Learn all about the plants, animals, and habitat of Walnut Canyon. Space is limited; reservations are required. Call 928-526-3367.

WALNUT CANYON National Monument Open House - Saturday, September 29, 2012, 8am-5pm Walk through layers of time, attend a ranger talk, tour the museum, and participate in family-friendly activities that illustrate the canyon's formation! Entrance fees waived for National Public Lands Day.

SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO National Monument Open House - Sunday, September 30, 2012, 8am-5pm Learn about the volcanic field that rocked northern Arizona's past! Walk through a lava flow, tour museums and join in a ranger talk! Entrance fee waived at Sunset Crater on Sunday, September 30, 2012.

WUPATKI National Monument Open House - Sunday, September 30, 9am - 5pm. See 900-year-old pueblos, explore the museum and join in a ranger talk! Entrance fee waived at Wupatki on Sunday, September 30, 2012.

Walnut Canyon National Monument is located 7.5 miles east of downtown Flagstaff via I-40 and can be reached at (928)526-3367 and on the web at www.nps.gov/waca.

Wupatki National Monument is 37 miles north of Flagstaff via Hwy 89, and can be reached at (928)679-2365 and www.nps.gov/wupa.

Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is located 12 miles north of Flagstaff via Hwy 89 and can be reached at (928)526-0502 and www.nps.gov/sucr.
