Backcountry Area and Cabins
Wrangell-St. Elias is mostly backcountry. It includes the Nutzotin, St. Elias, and Chugach Mountains; the high peaks of the Wrangell Mountains; and the Chitina, Chisana, and White Rivers and their tributaries. Visitor services include backcountry cabins and some lodges, but very little else. This is a place where a "primitive type of recreation" is experienced.
