Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Cancels April Programming in Park
Park remains open for physical activity as exception to Stay-At-Home Order
Republic, MO – Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield has cancelled all special programs in the park during April.
In alignment with federal guidance and the local stay-at-home order in Greene County, Wilson’s Creek will offer no public programs, school tours, or in-person visitor services in the park during April. The park visitor center also will remain closed. The Greene County order remains in effect until April 24, unless the county renews or withdraws it.
Cancelled events include Park Day, Junior Ranger Day. and spring school tours. Decisions regarding changes to programming beyond April will be made as conditions warrant. The park continues to monitor park visitation, along with state, local, and national guidance, and will adjust operations accordingly. Visit the park’s Facebook page and website to check current conditions. For updates about NPS operations, visit www.nps.gov/coronavirus. Visitors are encouraged to check with individual parks before visiting any NPS site.
Visitors currently may enter Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield during regular business hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week for physical activities, if they maintain a six-foot physical distance from others in the park. Entry fees are waived at Wilson’s Creek and other National Park Service sites that remain open. The park’s temporary visitor center remains closed following operational changes to keep visitors, staff and volunteers safe from the spread of COVID-19. The decision to keep the park gate open during regular business hours is based on the Greene County order’s restrictions and federal guidance for safe operations of National Park Service sites.
Wilson’s Creek law enforcement rangers and other mission-essential staff will be in the park, and visitors are encouraged to comply with the Greene County order. To learn more, visit the Greene County website. Under the order, residents may leave home for “essential activities,” including outdoor exercise.
Drivers may use the tour road and go to marked parking areas to start physical activity. The park asks drivers to exercise caution and adhere to the posted speed limit, as walkers and others may be in the tour road’s pedestrian lane. The park provides regularly sanitized restrooms near the entry gate, including a handwashing station. These facilities are portable toilets. For enhanced visitor safety and comfort, the park encourages them to use restrooms at home before coming to the park, and to take other precautions necessary to help protect themselves from COVID-19.
If contemplating a visit to Wilson’s Creek or another national park during this pandemic, the NPS asks visitors to adhere to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local public health authorities to protect visitors and employees. As services are limited, the NPS urges visitors to continue to practice Leave No Trace principles, including pack-in and pack-out, to keep outdoor spaces safer and healthier.

- Wash hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds as frequently as possible or use hand sanitizer
- Regularly clean high-touch surfaces (such as doorknobs, light switches, etc.)
- Don’t shake hands
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, preferably by using your arm or the crook of your elbow rather than you hand to stop the sneeze or cough
- Always wash your hands after sneezing or coughing
- Most importantly, stay home if you feel sick
High-risk individuals, such as the elderly and people with underlying conditions, should take extra precautions and follow CDC guidance for those at higher risk of serious illness.
