Birds - Mountain Bluebird

These birds can be found in open lands and meadows of Wind Cave National Park. Males are a bright sky blue, while females are a bluish brown color. Mountain bluebirds can be seen hovering above insect prey. These bluebirds are also attracted to freshly burned land—often using hollow dead trees for nesting sites. They also prefer shorter grasses, usually to escape predators and to see insects more easily. Mountain bluebirds are common in proper habitats during the summer months. Observed as early as March and as late as October.
