Since resuming the live distribution of bison in 1987, 820 (98%) of the bison culled from the herd were distributed live to various Native American Tribes. In 1994, the Park became involved with the Inter-Tribal Bison Cooperative (ITBC) for removal of excess bison. The ITBC has a membership of 50 Native American Tribes, and prioritizes tribal requests ensuring fairness in distribution to tribes in need of bison for herd enhancement and for spiritual and cultural practices.
