Two separate mountain ranges are visible to the east and west. Ten campsites are spread out over the entirety of the two-mile loop trail, and are marked by brown wooden posts that emerge straight up from the ground. Fixed to these posts are small square signs with campsite numbers ranging from 1-10, arrows pointing in the direction of each site, and a small brown square showing two white silhouettes of gender-neutral hikers with walking sticks and backpacks. <br /><br />The sites themselves are located in the inner dune areas, which are the flat low points between dunes. The ground here is hard-packed, firmer, and often slightly darker than the soft white sand found in the dunes themselves. In some of the sites and along parts of the trail, you can find bushels of varying types of grasses, which tend to be around 1-2 feet tall and dark green and tan in color. There may also be other types of vegetation along the trail and in the campsites, including the soaptree yucca.  Depending on the season, the yucca have two main components: their bayonet leaves, which are dark green, about an inch wide, and sharp enough at the tips to warrant their name; and the stem, which is a tall, woody feature that stands vertically from the base and is often over five feet tall. When a stem is present, many creamy white flowers rest on its tip. Seen from the front, which faces the highway, the central part of the building is two stories, flanked on each side by a single-story wing. Along the front, between the two wings is a deep, covered verandah with benches placed along the wall. The entrance consisting of two, multi-glass-paned doors, is located at the left end of the verandah. Both the roof over the central section and the verandah in the front is supported by large logs which extend out several feet beneath the top of the wall. The walls are a pinkish-tan color with the wood trim being painted a dark brown.<br /><br />At the right end of the front of the building is a historic sign of white-painted adobe which reads, “White Sands National Monument Visitor Center. Information, Scenic Drive, Museum.”<br /><br />To the left of the visitor center is a similar adobe building which houses the restrooms, women to the far left and men to the right. A sidewalk between the two buildings leads to a separate parking lot at the rear, past a water fountain and two shaded picnic tables. The area around the building is landscaped with desert plants.<br /><br />The interior of the Visitor Center has red-tiled floors and white painted walls. Upon entering the building, you find yourself in a rectangular foyer. An opening on the right leads to a large room with informational displays, books and other educational items for sale and the information desk. On the wall at the left side of the foyer is a tactile map of the building. A star indicates your current location and there are also room labels are also in Braille.<br /><br />At the far end of the foyer, another set of double doors leads into an enclosed courtyard. A verandah with benches is located on two sides, straight ahead and to the right.
