Kids, are you interested in learning more about the monument? Do you like to color, draw, and do arts and crafts? If you do, these activities are for you! If you would like to become a Junior Dunes Ranger, you can find the activity booklet on this page as well! Have fun learning about White Sands! Parents, this page is also for you. Below, you can find a variety of activities that can help you teach your child about White Sands and the National Park Service.

Crafty Kids Program
By using creative imaginations, children will discover secrets of the Chihuahuan desert including survival, adaptations, and geological formations. With hands on projects, the visitors at White Sands will learn a key lesson about this unique environment as well as design their own keepsake to take home and remember their trip and the monument.

Crafty Kids Program Holiday Keepsake Lesson Plan
This holiday keepsake teaches children about how park abbreviations work as well as recycling. This craft can be done with mostly recycled materials which can teach children about the second life of materials as well.

Crafty Kids Program Holiday Wreath Lesson Plan
The wreath teaches children about a couple of the animals at White Sands as well as a plant within the monument and also about recycling. The wreath is a colorful representation of the child as well as some important pieces of the monument.

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 01: Leaping Lizards
There are so many lizards here at the monument! Through many years of changing habitats and adapting to their surroundings, most of our lizards are white in coloration. Invent your own lizard with colors that would help him hide in your choice of environment!

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 02: Kit Kites
Kids will learn how these members of the dog family survive the heat with their soft light fur and bushy tails. We will explore the differences between coyotes, wolves, and foxes and learn how they all coexist in the Chihuahuan desert, especially here at White Sands! Kids can color their own Kit Fox on their kites.

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 03: Staying Cool
In a desert inside a desert, it is HOT, HOT, HOT! How do animals stay cool under the scorching sun? Discover creatures we may not see during the day time, how they beat the heat and get water from the desert. Make fans or visors with White Sands influenced designs that the kids can use on their hikes in the dunes!

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 04: Snake Celebration
Slithery snakes are not uncommon out here. Discover a few snakes in this region and the different patterns that differentiate them. Discover their interesting biology and the help they give us. Kids can create their own snake that hangs like a wind chime.

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 05: Owl Prints
Burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) are land dwelling birds that have taken quite nicely to the scrub at White Sands. Pre-cut bird shapes with a bright background will make this a perfect piece for the family fridge, window, or office!

Crafty Kids Program Lesson Plan 06: Great Horney Toads!
Horned lizards look tough, but that doesn't mean other animals wouldn't like to make them their lunch. The horned lizard, also sometimes called a horny toad because of its round head, is preyed upon by a variety of birds, snakes, coyotes, and foxes. Kids can create their own horned lizard.
