Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has temporarily closed unpaved roads due to rainy weather. Closures will continue throughout the fall, winter and spring months as conditions dictate. Driving on unpaved roads in wet and snowy conditions poses a safety risk to visitors driving them and can also damage roads by causing ruts and mudholes. Ruts can consequently channel rain water run-off, exacerbating the impacts of erosion to the entire road and cause the road to fail over time. Additionally, weakened and shallow-rooted trees are most likely to fall after a heavy rain or during windy conditions, so numerous hazard trees can block roads and trails during this time of year posing a very serious threat to visitors. Because of these safety risks and the subsequent adverse impacts to the park’s roads, the park plans to temporarily close the following roads until they conditions improve:
- Peltier Valley Road.
- Brandy Creek/ Shasta Bally Road (from Sheep Camp to the top of Shasta Bally).
- Mill Creek Road.
- South Shore Drive.
- Crystal Creek Road (above the Whiskeytown Falls Trail to Coggins Park)
- South Fork Lookout Mountain Road.
