Memorial Day 2018

Memorial Day is a very special time at Vicksburg National Military Park. The weekend gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and honor the sacrifice of the brave soldiers, sailors, and marines who gave their life during the Vicksburg Campaign and other conflicts. Throughout the weekend, the military park and our partners will be offering a variety of events to commemorate Memorial Day and it's important meanings. May 28th, Memorial Day, will be a fee-free day at Vicksburg National Military Park. Visitors on any other day will be required to pay the standard entrance fee.

Flags in the National Cemetery Volunteer Event:

Vicksburg National Military Park is seeking volunteers to help place flags at each headstone in the National Cemetery in honor of Memorial Day. Work will begin on May 25th at 7:30 am at the cemetery and continue until each headstone has a flag accompanying it. Volunteers do not need to preregister and may come and go as they are available, but all volunteers will be required to sign a volunteer agreement. Volunteers will also be needed to monitor the flags throughout the weekend. On May 29th volunteers will be needed to pick up the flags. This project will also begin at 7:30 am. Volunteer groups are encouraged to contact us in advance.

Living History Musket and Cannon Demonstrations:

Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, living historians will bring the Civil War to life with live weapons demonstrations. Experience the firing of a 12-pound Napoleon at the park visitor center at 10am and 2pm each day, and musket/infantry demonstrations at 11am and 1pm.

Symphony at Sunset: Celebrating Mississippi’s Bicentennial Year:

With the support of the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign and the Four Seasons of the Arts, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert at 7pm on Saturday May 26th at the Visitor Center to honor Memorial Day and the 155th anniversary of the siege of Vicksburg. No public parking is available at the visitor center. Guests wishing to attend the symphony should park at the Vicksburg Outlet Mall and use the free shuttle to access the symphony. Shuttle service will begin at 5:00pm.

Memorial Day Parade:

Vicksburg National Military Park will take part in the City of Vicksburg’s annual Memorial Day parade on May 28th. The city parade begins at 10:00 AM and will proceed along Washington Street.

Free Guided Tours of the Military Park to Residents of Warren County and the city of Vicksburg:

On May 28th, The Friends’ of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign and the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors’ Bureau will offer 2 free guided bus tours at 10am and 2pm of the military park to residents of Vicksburg and Warren County. Tours will last 2 hours each, and participants must be at least 8 years old. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Residents may reserve a spot on the tours by calling 601-636-0583 ext.2208 or 2905.Participants must be at the visitor center 30 minutes prior to tour time.

National Cemetery Ceremony:

On May 28th at 1pm, the National Park Service in conjunction with local veterans will host a remembrance event, including a flag-raising ceremony at the Vicksburg National Cemetery. Parking in the cemetery will be limited to those with limited mobility. General parking will be available at the USS Cairo Museum, a short walk to the cemetery site.

Join Park Rangers for a guided walk of the cemetery at the conclusion of the ceremony. The walk will last 1 hour and cover 1 mile of the cemetery tour road.
