Thing to Do
Hike El Cajete Loop
TEMPORARY CLOSURE NOTICE: The 1.5-mile approach from the Ranger Station to the intersection with the South Mountain, Redondo Foothills, and El Cajete trails is closed to all public use from September 15 - October 4, 2024, to allow heavy equipment crews to resurface and improve the roadway.
This 9.4-mile (15.1 km) loop heads up a narrow valley and passes over two ridges before arriving at El Cajete Meadow, one of the prettiest in the preserve. Several washouts along the trail may be challenging, and should not be attempted if water is flowing. The trail around the meadow is best hiked clockwise.Begin your hike at the Ranger Station in the Cabin District. Hike southwest along VC02 toward South Mountain, passing a closed cable gate a short distance from the Ranger Station. From the cable gate, follow VC02 for approximately 2.9 miles until you reach the intersection with VC07. Take a left on VC07 and follow it for about 2 miles. Shortly after El Cajete Meadow comes into view through the trees on the right, VC07 will meet VC0701. Turn right on VC0701 and head into the meadow. Hike about 0.6 miles until you reach the junction with VC02; turn right here and follow VC02 all the way back to your starting point.
