Deciphering Pictograph Messages
- Grade Level:
- Lower Elementary: Pre-Kindergarten through Second Grade
- Literacy and Language Arts
Some Plains Indian tribes used written symbols similar to record significant events. These symbols helped people who spoke different languages to communicate important information about themselves and the world around them. Students will interpret a message written in Plains Indian pictograph form and create their own pictograph message. The object of this activity is to help students to gain greater insight into ways American Indians living on the Great Plains during the 1800s communicated.
