Being Processed: Abraham Cohen
- Grade Level:
- High School: Ninth Grade through Twelfth Grade
- Literacy and Language Arts,Social Studies
Being Processed is a high school level self-guided activity that allows students to understand through the experiences of Russian-born immigrant Abraham Cohen's procession on Ellis Island. They'll learn about the reasons why Russian immigrants were seeking citizenship in the United States just prior to World War I. As a participant in the role playing of an immigrant or as an inspector, students will take part in a Board of Special Inquiry. As an immigrant, they will be subjected to a list of questions about their personal lives and their reasons for coming to America. Eventually, they will need to decide if Abraham Cohen should have gained entry into the United States, or been deported.
