Background

“Being Processed” is a high school level self-guided activity.  Through the experiences of an Italian-born immigrant, students will learn about Rosaria Esposito's procession through Ellis Island. They will uncover why Italian immigrants were seeking citizenship in the United States just prior to World War I. They will have to role play and make decisions for Rosaria’s next steps. In the end, students will have a better understanding on what it was like arriving to Ellis Island with a disease, and the process of being detained for observation and recovery.
