Background

This a post-visit activity to be conducted after students attend the ranger-led beaver hike at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Lodges are beaver homes and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a great place for a beaver to live. Using what they learned on their field trip, students will make a "for sale" flyer for a beaver home at Sleeping Bear.

After completing this post-visit activity, students will be able to:

  • explain the purpose of a beaver lodge and identify it as a type of shelter
  • list materials beavers use to construct their lodges
  • understand where lodges are located
  • draw a picture of the inside and the outside of a beaver lodge
