PUBLIC REVIEW FOR THE SUNSET CRATER VOLCANO NATIONAL MONUMENT TRAIL PLAN AND GMP AMENDMENT EA FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA – The National Park Service is proposing to develop a new hiking trail system at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument to provide increased recreational experiences for monument visitors, address resource preservation concerns, and remedy ongoing maintenance needs. A no-action alternative and two action alternatives were considered in an Environmental Assessment (EA). In addition, due to the proposed alternatives, an amendment to the monument's General Management Plan was also addressed through this EA. The EA has been prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to provide the decision-making framework that 1) analyzes a reasonable range of alternatives to meet project objectives, 2) evaluates potential issues and impacts to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument's resources and values, and 3) identifies mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts. The Environmental Assessment is now available for public review and comment at the National Park Service website Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (https://parkplanning.nps.gov/sucrtrailea). Hard copies of the document will also be available at the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument Visitor Center. We encourage you to review the Environmental Assessment and send us your thoughts by July 26, 2013. You may submit comments online at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/sucrtrailea or you may mail or hand-deliver comments to the following address. Your comments will be considered as we move toward a decision. Lisa Leap Acting Superintendent Flagstaff Area National Monuments 6400 N. Hwy. 89 Flagstaff, Arizona 86004 |
