The Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail, Inc. is a grassroots organization dedicated to the preservation of Black history and culture in the region. When it became apparant that no other institution or organization in Northern New England was involved in the systematic documentation of UGRR routes, we began to assume that role. We have been working closely with the Cartland House in Lee, a well-documented safe house, as a model of what can be accomplished by careful research and information-sharing.
