Each year there are two application periods for Geoscientists-in-the-Parks positions. Refer to the tables below for information regarding the application process and important deadlines.

Year-round NPS parks / regions / networks work with the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD) to determine their natural resource science management, education, and interpretive needs and enter their position descriptions on the partner's website.
September - October

October 31: DEADLINE for NPS to submit position descriptions for spring/summer positions.

December - February December 1: Spring/summer GIP positions are posted on the partner's website where applicants can begin reviewing and applying for positions.

February 2: DEADLINE to submit applications for spring/summer positions.

1st two weeks in February: Supervisors screen applications for spring/summer positions, conduct phone interviews with top candidates, and begin making offers to the best candidates.

Last week in February: DEADLINE for supervisors to select participant for spring/summer positions.

March

Applicants accepts position offer and park determines the start and end date

2nd week in March: Partner notifies applicants that were not selected for GIP positions. Spring/summer positions can begin any time after May 15.

Spring/summer positions can begin as early as April, but most begin in May or June.

September

Early September: DEADLINE for GIP participants to send final report & program evaluation and for supervisors to submit an evaluation to give feedback on participant & program to the partner's. (NOTE: These dates may vary, depending on the end date of the position.)

third week in August: Interview / selection deadline.

end of August: Deadline for the selected applicant to accept or decline the position offer.

Partner sends acceptance packets to selected participants. Selected participant must sign an agreement to officially accept the position and agree to terms of the GIP Program.

September


Partner notifies applicants that were not selected for GIP positions. Fall/winter positions can begin as early as September 1; most begin in September or October. Winter positions may begin as late as March.
