Tours to Liberty Island to continue during 2011 work schedule for the interior of Lady Liberty.
The National Park Service announced that in late 2011, access to the interior portions of the Statue of Liberty National Monument will be suspended while the famous sculpture undergoes a series of modifications and improvements. These improvements were anticipated when the National Park Service reopened the Crown in July 2009.
Liberty Island will remain open as will the Immigration Museum upon Ellis Island. The National Park Service will increase the number of outdoor tours available to the public. For most of the visiting public, there will be no change. When the monument was open, only 3,000 people went inside per day. That works out to be only about 18% of our daily visitors.
