SCRANTON, PA –Perhaps the busiest season in Northeastern Pennsylvania is the fall foliage season. As nature prepares to display her most colorful outfit for the year, Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA is planning to transport visitors through some of the most beautiful fall scenery in the nearby Pocono Mountains. Nine steam-powered train trips will leave the downtown railroad yard headed for two destinations.
Excursions to Moscow, PA will depart the Steamtown NHS Boarding Platform at 1:00 p.m. on October 6, 8 (Columbus Day), 13, 20, 21 and 27, and is expected to return at 3:00 p.m. The Lackawanna & Wyoming Valley Railway Historical Society, which leases the former Moscow passenger and freight train stations, will offer light refreshments during the train’s layover period. Moscow excursion tickets are priced at $21.00 for adults 17 to 61, $19.00 for seniors 62 and older, and $15.00 for children aged 6-16. Children 5 and younger require a “no-charge” ticket.
Excursions to Tobyhanna, PA a village atop the Pocono Mountains, are planned for October 7, 14 and 28. The Coolbaugh Township Historical Association and the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority will conduct brief walking tours during each of the one-hour layovers, and will have light refreshments for sale. Departure from the Steamtown NHS Boarding Platform is 11:00 a.m., with an expected 3:00 p.m. return. Ticket prices for the Tobyhanna excursion are $31.00 for adults 17 to 61, $26.00 for seniors 62 and older, and $20.00 for children aged 6-16. Children 5 and younger require a “no-charge” ticket.
The “Scranton Limited” short train rides inside the park boundary will also operate on Monday, October 8. These 30-minute train rides depart from the Roundhouse boarding area at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. The “Scranton Limited” short train rides continue to operate Wednesdays through Sundays at the times listed through December 29. There is a $3.00 additional charge for this ride. Admission to the National Park grounds at Steamtown is $6.00 per adult, daily, ages 17 and older. Children under age 16, accompanied by an adult, are admitted to the Park at no cost. All walking tours offered by the Steamtown NHS staff, including museum access and the park movie, Steel and Steam, are covered by this Entrance Fee.
Located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Steamtown is open daily from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then, follow the signs to the main entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues.
