This year's event is designed to highlight major advances in railroad technology by contrasting a variety of modern and historic rail equipment and to educate the public on the amazing technological and environmental advances in the industry over the last 10 years. Participating railroads include Amtrak, Canadian Pacific Railway, the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad, Norfolk Southern Railroad, the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Society and the Sperry Rail Car Corporation.

The event will "kick-off" Friday, August 29 with a banquet at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Mary Jane Hosler at (570) 689-7760 prior to August 21.

The "Whistle Stop" excursion will be pulled by historic diesel locomotives, and board passengers at various stations along the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad's historic Pocono Mainline. Guests may disembark at either of two stops: at the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel to walk to Scranton's Courthouse Square area for food, fun and music at La Festa Italiana, or at Steamtown National Historic Site to visit the Railfest activities. The return-trip "Whistle Stop" excursion will depart from Steamtown at 4:00 p.m. and from the Radisson at Lackawanna Station Hotel at 4:15 p.m.
