Summer is in full-swing, and with it, the train ride excursions at Steamtown National Historic Site in downtown Scranton. Our August schedule has something for everyone. 

On Saturday, August 5 or Sunday, August 6, join us aboard an excursion to the Moscow Country Street Fair. Each trip will visit the restored passenger station and freight depot at Moscow, Pennsylvania, a short walk to and from the Moscow Country Street Fair. There you can grab a bite to eat, visit a car show, quilt show, arts and crafts vendors and enjoy live music. The excursion departs at 12:30 p.m. and returns to the park at 4:00 p.m. Ticket pricing is $24 for adults, ages 16-61, $22 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $17 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a free ticket. 

Saturday, August 12, will feature an excursion to Moscow, Pennsylvania. Visit the restored passenger station and freight depot. Light refreshments and souvenirs will also be available at Moscow Station stop. Sales support the restoration of the park’s Boston & Maine #3713 steam locomotive. The excursion departs at 12:30 p.m. and returns to the park at 3:00 p.m. Ticket pricing is $24 for adults, ages 16-61, $22 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $17 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a free ticket. 

On Sunday, August 13, we’ll venture to Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania for a roundtrip excursion departing the Steamtown Boarding Platform at 11:00 a.m. and returning to the park at 3:00 p.m. Step back to the Roaring 1920s at the historic Gouldsboro train station. Food, drink, books and souvenirs will be available for purchase.  A Boy Scout Railroading Merit Badge program, which meets merit badge requirements to include units on railroad history, safety and the train ride, is also offered for this trip.  For more information on the Scout program or reservations, phone 570-340-5204. August 20, enjoy a Sunday afternoon train ride to Cresco, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains. The restored depot preserves aspects of life in the early days of the Poconos. At the depot, a car show exhibit featuring historic cars of yesteryear is planned, weather-permitting.  The train departs Steamtown’s Boarding Platform at 11:30 a.m. and returns to the park at 4:00 p.m.  Ticket pricing is $34 for adults, ages 16-61, $29 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $22 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a free ticket. 

On Saturday, August 26, enjoy a roundtrip excursion to Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania. We’ll journey along the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad’s mainline to the railroad station along the line’s highest elevation and take a walking tour to a former “ice house” nearby. The train departs Steamtown at 11:00 a.m., and is scheduled to return at 3:00 p.m. Ticket pricing is $34 for adults, ages 16-61, $29 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $22 for children ages 6-15. Children to age 5 require a free ticket. 

To end the August excursion schedule, on Sunday, August 27 we’ll again travel to Moscow, Pennsylvania. Visit the restored passenger station and freight depot. Light refreshments and souvenirs will also be available at Moscow Station Stop. Sales support the restoration of the park’s Boston & Maine #3713 steam locomotive. The excursion departs at 12:30 p.m. and returns at 3:00 p.m. Ticket pricing is $24 for adults, ages 16-61, $22 for seniors, ages 62 and older, $17 for children ages 6-15. And remember that during the following weekend, Saturday, September 2 and Sunday, September 3, the park will host Railfest 2017 and an excursion to Moscow each day, with photo-runbys at the station. Early reservations for those trips are strongly recommended!

All excursions will be powered with historic diesel locomotives. Excursion fares include the park Entrance Fee, which is $7.00 per adult, daily, ages 16 and older. Children ages 15 and younger, accompanied by an adult, are admitted to the Park at no cost. All walking tours offered by the park staff, including museum access and the park movie, “Steel and Steam,” are included in the Entrance Fee. Advance reservations are recommended although seats may be available at the ticket office prior to train boarding. Tickets are non-refundable unless an excursion is cancelled by park management. We accept all major credit and debit cards. Phone (570) 340-5204, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. daily, to purchase tickets.

The popular “Scranton Limited” short train rides will continue to operate daily except Sundays through August at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 and 2:15 p.m. On Sundays we offer the “Nay Aug Gorge Limited” short train ride that transports visitors to the entrance of Nay Aug Tunnel. The “Nay Aug Gorge Limited” operates on the same timetable. Tickets to ride either train cost $5.00 per person, all ages 6 and older. 

Located in downtown Scranton, Pa., Steamtown NHS is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  From I-81 follow exit 185 (Central Scranton Expressway); then, follow the brown and white signs to the park entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues (GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67).
