SCRANTON, PA - Steamtown National Historic Site will celebrate National Park Week Sunday, April 22, through Saturday, April 28, 2007. The theme for 2007 is “National Parks: Explore, Learn and Protect,” and we will shine with special exhibits and theater presentations, partner displays, Junior Ranger activities and a northeastern Pennsylvania movie premiere!
Special exhibits will showcase various perspectives of America’s greatest treasure, our National Parks. Partner displays will highlight regional opportunities for both indoor and outdoor exploration; on Junior Ranger Day, April 28, children ages 6-12 can work to become Junior Rangers while visiting and children 5 and younger can work with their parents on a special “Discovery” program. Additionally, through a special partnership with AMS Production Group, Dallas, TX, Steamtown NHS will proudly premiere the 2006 critically acclaimed documentary, “Rising from the Rails: The Story of the Pullman Porter” on both April 22 and April 28!
The “Scranton Limited” short rain rides, covering nearly 3 miles round trip, are offered Wednesdays through Sundays, inside the park boundary. These 30-minute train rides depart from the Roundhouse boarding area on Wednesdays with a historic diesel locomotive at 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., and 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. They will also operate with a steam locomotive Thursdays – Sundays at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. The “Scranton Limited” train ride tickets cost $3.00 per person, all ages 6 and older. For a unique view of operations, each steam departure of the Scranton Limited will allow one rider in the locomotive cab for an additional $30.00 fee, only on days when a steam locomotive is in operation. Cab rides are available to those who are 16 years of age and older. Turntable demonstrations and Ranger-led walking tours will also be available daily.
The Entrance Fee to the grounds at Steamtown is $6.oo per adult, daily, ages 17 and older. Those under 16, accompanied by an adult, are admitted to the Park at no cost. All walking tours offered by the Steamtown NHS staff, including museum access and the park movie, Steel and Steam, are included in the Entrance Fee.
