Superintendent Woody Harrell is pleased to announce that Shiloh National Military Park will be hosting a Kids Fun Day on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Park Rangers at Shiloh Battlefield will offer a number of hands-on activities for children from the ages 9 to 12, such as the “School of the Soldier,” during which visitors will use toy rifles to learn different Civil War marching drills, as well as the nine steps required to load and fire a Civil War musket. They will also discover how to read signal flags and decode cipher coded army messages.
“We are excited to present this opportunity to area children. We hope the fun filled, yet educational, activities will introduce young people to the importance of preservation and commemoration in an exciting environment. The youngsters will be able to trace the history of the Shiloh area through the turbulent times of the Civil War and visualize what life would have been like for past generations,” stated Superintendent Harrell.
Participation is by registration as the program can only accommodate 40 children. Registered children will participate in the activities noted above from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Each child will need to wear clothing appropriate for outdoor physical activities, such as, hiking boots, tennis shoes, hats, and sun block.
At the end of the day, each child will earn a Junior Ranger patch and certificate, as well as, a special commemorative battlefield preservation patch.
If you would like to register your child to participate in the Kids Fun Day activities you may sign up at the park’s website at www.nps.gov/shil, or contact Park Rangers Mallory Wilkerson or Timothy Arnold at 731-689-5696.
