Date: February 25, 2011

Rain, a fast moving thunderstorm, and a high wind warning kept firefighters from the Smith Run Fire today. The rain is welcome, but winds of 25 mph, gusting to 60 mph, will quickly dry leaves and twigs throughout the area. Tomorrow's forecast is for calmer weather. These more favorable conditions will permit firefighters to safely return to the area and continue working towards containment. The fire’s perimeter has not changed; the total acreage remains about 2,000 acres, with 80% containment.

For safety reasons, the following closures are still in place as a result of the fire: Skyline Drive between Front Royal and Rt. 211 (Thornton Gap); Mt. Marshall Trail from Skyline Drive to the intersection at the Bluff Trail; Appalachian Trail between Compton Gap and the Browntown Trail; Lands Run Gap Fire Road; and the Jenkins Gap Trail.
