Rain and Snow Forecast for Rocks Mountain Fire in Shenandoah National Park

The Rocks Mountain Fire in the southern third of Shenandoah National Park remains within the park's boundary. Firefighters ensured containment lines were as secure as possible and then were sent to their homes as the winter storm approached the area this afternoon. Park fire managers will monitor the fire and plan for continued actions depending upon the effects of the winter storm.

The fire, which has grown to 150 acres, was reported to park at approximately 3:10 p.m. on February 28, 2014. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Due to the fire and to ensure visitor safety, following trail closures are in effect until further notice: Riprap, Wildcat Ridge and Rocks Mountain.The rest of the park including the Skyline remains open.

Up to 91 personnel were working to contain the fire.Resources assigned to the fire include personnel from the National Park Service, US Forest Service, Virginia Department of Forestry, and Dooms Volunteer Fire Company.Additional firefighters and equipment have been requested.
