Join us on Saturday, December 7 to prepare for Christmas as they did in the olden days.

Scotts Bluff National Monument, Legacy of the Plains Museum, Chimney Rock National Historic Site and the Melbeta Post Office will be hosting a variety of activities that evoke a time gone by.

"Christmas on the Prairie" at Scotts Bluff NM offers visitors a chance to make decorations in the style of 19th century holiday ornaments from 10 am to 4 pm. Children and adults will have a chance to make paper chains, popcorn strings, corn husk stars, pine cone bird feeders and painting dough ornaments to decorate their homes this Christmas. Sing traditional carols to the music of the Village Players and enjoy refreshments courtesy of Oregon Trail Museum Association.

At Legacy of the Plains, two events of the past will be combined. "High Plains Christmas" will give people an opportunity to enjoy some outdoor and indoor fun from 10 am to 3 pm. Ride in a horse drawn hay wagon, toast marshmallows, work on crafts, send letters to Santa via Pony Express and enjoy a hot soup lunch and hot chocolate. The annual "Trees Along the Trail" competition consists of trees decorated by twenty community non-profit organizations competing for your votes. The ballots will be available for $1.00 each. This is the kickoff event for the December Christmas Tree Decorating Contest that will continue through December 23. The contest benefits the museum and area charities. Refreshments and prize money are courtesy of H&R Block.

Chimney Rock National Historic Site will celebrate "Christmas on the Prairie" from 9 am to 4 pm. Visitors will have a chance to make greeting cards and decorate gift bags while they enjoy holiday treats. This year there will be a door prize as well.

The Melbeta Post Office is pleased to join this year's Christmas on the Prairie. The extended hours will be 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. Refreshments will be provided, and an antique stamp collection will be on display. Come in and see our antique mailbox wall and service window. There will be plenty of Christmas stamps for sale and all mail, including packages, will be hand cancelled with the Melbeta postmark. The post office is located at 101 2nd St. (one block south of Hwy 92 and CR 29 intersection).

Entrance to all of the sites will be free all day on December 7.
