Summer is coming and Scotts Bluff National Monument will be ready with longer hours and great programs.

Starting Memorial Day weekend, 5/26-5/28, the visitor center will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The summit road will close at 6:30 p.m. and all vehicles must be off the summit by 7:00 p.m. Weekdays may have shorter hours due to lower staffing levels until June 7 when seasonal rangers will be on staff.

There are a few changes and additions to the regular summer programs this year. The Tuesday Evening Guest Speaker series is changing day and time to Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. Subjects ranging from the Plains Indians to the Orphan Train to insects will be presented by new and returning speakers. Music at the Monument remains on Sundays in June, but the time is changing to 4:00 p.m. On Friday evenings at 8:00 p.m. rangers will still give programs on various topics concerning the monument.

The popular living history program will continue each day as rangers dress in clothing of the emigrants and other characters that passed through the area. New this year is the Saturday morning ranger talk or walk at 10:00 a.m. You may go on a walk to discover the flowers or geology of the bluff or you may learn new things through a slide program in the visitor center.

Program titles and subjects will be announced at the beginning of each week so visitors and residents can decide which programs they wish to attend.
