Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site (NHS) will mark 153 years since the brutal attack by US troops on a group of peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho camped on the Big Sandy Creek in 1864. Three free commemorative programs will be offered on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, two at the park and one at the Crow-Luther Cultural Events Center in Eads, CO.

Park gates will open at 7:00 am for those wishing to be on site shortly after sunrise. At 8:00 am and 2:00 pm, join Park Guides John Launius and Teri Jobe for guided walking tours that will discuss events leading up to, during, and after the Sand Creek Massacre. These 90 minute programs will begin in the visitor parking lot. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended and visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather.

Crow-Luther Cultural Events Center, Eads, CO.

At 5:00 pm, join park volunteer and recognized Sand Creek Massacre expert Jeff Campbell for a free interpretive program on the Sand Creek Massacre. Drawing on a wealth of primary resources, Jeff has extensively researched the massacre and this one-hour program will examine the tragedy in detail. Jeff will discuss myths, which have sprung up over the years since the massacre, as well as current research that provides historians a clearer picture of what transpired on that cold November morning at Sand Creek, 153 years ago. The Crow-Luther Cultural Events Center (Plains Theater) is located at 1304 Maine St, Eads, CO 81036.

Beginning on December 1st, Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site will switch to winter operating hours: open Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. For additional information, please call the park at 719-729-3003 or visit www.nps.gov/sand.
