P-39: Killed Trying to Cross the 118 Freeway

Female | Born 2012 | Died December 2016

This female who roamed the Santa Susana Mountains is thought to have been born in 2011 or 2012. She entered the study in April 2015 and, along with her daughter P-40, were the focus of some amazing photos that captured them feeding on a deer. P-38 was the father.

P-39 died trying to cross the 118 Freeway in early December 2016. While she resided in the Santa Susana Mountains, she successfully crossed the freeway into the Simi Hills a few days prior to her death. Two of the kittens, P-51 and P-52, also died trying to cross the same freeway in separate incidents over the next two months. P-50 was found to be alive and healthy in spring 2017.

In the summer of 2016, she gave birth to her second known litter of three kittens: P-50, P-51, and P-52. The father was, again, P-38.
