Description:
6-Month, Part Time, 2 - 3 days per week (16 - 24 hrs/week) starting 2020. Possibility of extension if project work and funding become available.
Salary Range:
$14.25 - $16.53 per hour, depending on level of education and work experience.
Location:
Various park site locations, including Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, and Los Angeles.
Work Site and Conditions:
For field positions, work is outdoors, physically strenuous in hot conditions. Temperatures range from 80 - 105 F during summer. Potential exposure to
poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes.
Required Skills, Experience, and Qualifications for Field Positions:
-Currently Enrolled in College.
-Must be able to hike 1-5 miles on and off-trail.
-Safety mindset is a must!
-Must be 18 years or older.
-Driver License required.
-Ability to lift between 40 to 50 lbs.
-Ability to maintain records and write reports.
-Professionalism. You will follow all Santa Monica Mountains Fund and partnering National Park Service policies, maintain professional boundaries with work colleagues and program participants.
-Substance Free. You will refrain from using any tobacco products, vaporizers, electronic cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs.
-CA DMV Driver Record Request.
-Live Scan or other background check may be required depending on position.
-Must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident.
Program Background:
The SAMO Youth Program provides paid work experience and mentoring for diverse college students. The goals of the program are to create a developmental work experience for underrepresented students that:
1) Promotes an ethic for conservation and stewardship.
2) Introduces students towards careers in public service.
Partnership:
The Santa Monica Mountains Fund works to protect and encourage appreciation and understanding of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. The Fund supports the National Park Service efforts in education, science, research, improving facilities, community engagement, stewardship and philanthropy.

Park Guide/Outdoor Education Intern
Help visitors and students connect with the outdoors by leading hikes and programs, presenting talks and answering questions for the public. Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Business Intern
Assist Grant and Agreement Specialist with contracts, track financial reports, prepare and distribute internal and partner communications. Learn all about the financial business of park projects.

Laborer
Trade-Skills welcomed! Get outside and help maintain our park buildings. Lots of hands-on experience using specialized tools to work on carpentry, electrical, painting, and plumbing projects.
Location: Calabasas, CA.
Nature Neighbor
Assist with conservation by learning about wildlife research conducted in the park. Work will focus on communicating research findings to local communities to encourage environmental stewardship.
Location: Thousand Oaks, CA.
Plants Field Technician
Help monitor plant diversity, track and treat infestations of wildland weeds, collect native seed, sow and grow in our plant nursery, help lead planting and habitat restoration projects. Local botany knowledge preferred.

Science Data Management Intern
Work with park scientists to help monitor project data (reptiles, amphibians, mammals, vegetation). Work will focus on helping to maintain databases, 76analysis, and visual reports.

Biological Science Technician
Hike and deploy acoustic bat monitoring equipment, data collection and entry. Opportunities to help field ecology crews on vegetation monitoring, coastal intertidal or herpetology studies. Experience with monitoring protocols preferred.

GIS Technician
Help park staff access GIS software and data. Produce maps with basic analysis, create layers and help maintain on-line maps. Organize datasets while sharing resources with park partners and researchers. Advanced GIS experience preferred, with interest in natural and cultural resources.

Spanish Communications Specialist
Work with our Public Affairs Office to write press releases, social media posts, and talking points en español. Help with park photography and relevant park stories. Spanish fluency required. Knowledge in journalism, photography, and interest in outdoors preferred.
