A Typical Civil War Redoubt

SnedenPlan38thInf
This plan of a Union redoubt and rifle pits enfilading the Leesburg and Fairfax turnpikes two miles from Alexandria, Virginia is very similar to the redoubt built by 2nd. Lt. Henry M. Robert at American Camp. This particular facility was built by the 38th, 40th N.Y. and 3rd Maine regiments during October and November 1861. The diagram at lower right reveals the classic design of as seen from the side. Note the contemporary view of Robert's Redoubt today taken from the prairie.
